From President |
Greetings all,
As the end of Summer hopefully draws near your local Orchid society has a lot going on! We had a great program in July with Mickey Connell speaking on Dendrobiums and where your beloved President once again ‘won’ several door prizes; we've got a wonderful program again this month from some world traveling MOS'ers, our website is up and running with abandon, there are volunteer days ongoing in the Botanic Garden orchid greenhouse, and the annual MOS show is not too far ahead in October. All of this activity means two things - there's something for everyone and we need everyone's help - so please find a place to help out and jump in as a volunteer. The nominating committee for officers for next year has been appointed (by tradition consisting of the 3 immediate past-Presidents - Fenwick Chappell, Charles Wilson and Debra Baker). If you are interested in serving or if yo would like to nominate a member, please let any of the committee members know.
This month's "Items of Interest" column include:
a) Jim Duncan, Executive Director of the Memphis Botanic Garden, will make a special guest appearance at our August meeting to bring us up to date on all the exciting goings-on at the MBG;
b) don't forget to contact Chuck Pintner if you'd like to order some plants from Carter and Holmes at a whopping big discount (assuming we get enough plants ordered);
c) if you have any ideas or suggestions for our ever expanding website please touch base with Alex Kumok;
d) and if you'd like to sponsor a class in the wildly popular annual MOS show in October you'd better hurry and contact Charles Wilson before they're all taken!
And last but not least (well, for those that are interested anyway), Big Boy Rowland is tipping the scales at a whopping 12lbs 9oz and 24" in length. Quite a change from the pygmy that arrived eight months ago at 13" and less than 2 lbs! Before you know it he'll be wanting his own greenhouse!! See you Sunday, Michael Rowland, El Presidente |
